Wikivoyage General:Offline version
From Wikivoyage General
| This article describes our project. |
You as a traveller should be able to take your tour guide with you on the road. An internet cafe is not always just around the corner. But maybe you have a laptop or palm with the content of Wikivoyage on it. Our offline version is weekly updated.

[edit] What files do I need?
Our directory provides an overview over our archives to you. Besides you can see the date of our last update.
We provide our content as .zip and .tbzs files. The zip files are 3 to 4 times bigger than the corresponding .tbz2 files, but Windows user can simply open that files with a double click.
What files you need depends on the content you need. Do you set a high value that offline and online version appear similar? You can choose:
- Only text
- Text and images (with the small size as they appear in the article)
- Text and images (with the original size as they appear in the description page on shared:)
[edit] Text of the articles
We provide tow versions of our articles. If you can abandon the pictures you should download the pure test version (zip). All links to the images have been removed from all articles. So no orphaned boxes will appear iin the articles. If you want the images included to the articles you should download the full version (zip). Unpack the file into a new directory.
[edit] Images
If you want to use the media files, the package with reduced image size (zip) is suitable. It contains all images using the size as it appears in the article. The much bigger full package (zip) contains the images in original size. Dont waste your bandwidth by downloading both archives. The full package also contains the reduced images. Unpack the image package into the same directory that you used for your text files.
[edit] Skins
The skins influence the outfit of Wikivoyage. You do not need the skins for an offline version, unless you make a point of having an original appearance. Unpack the skins (zip) to the same offline directory.
[edit] What to do with the .tar and .tbz2 files?
tar is not only the type of packed files, its also the name of an ancient and very common Unix/Linux programme used for packing and unpacking.
[edit] Windows
The free 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov can manage .tar archives. .tbz2 needs two steps:
- Uncompress the bzip2-compressed .tar-file: de-full.tbz2 -> de-full.tar
- Unpack the .tarfile: de-full.tar -> wanted directory de/ with some subdirectories.
[edit] Linux
Unix/Linux user should know it. If not:
cd WV-Offline tar xvf foo.tar
tbz2 is a bzip2-compressed tar-file. In Linux:
cd WV-Offline tar xvfj foo.tbz2
[edit] Other operating systems
Other operating systems use different programmes. (look at List of archivers).
[edit] Everything done properly?
Your new Wikivoyage offline directory should contain the folowwing subdirectories after unpacking all files:
- de/it
- shared
- skins
- Logo
If you do not want tu use the skins „skins“ and „Logo“ can be missed. You will find all the media files in the „shared“ subdirectory. In case of using the text-only version you can abandon the „shared“ subdirectory.
[edit] How to browse offline?
Type in your browser:
“Path/to/WV-Offline-directory”/de/index.html
Replace the “Path/to/WV-Offline-directory” with your real directory name (add the name of the drive when you use Windows). E.g.:
C:\Downloads\WV-Offline\de\index.html
Besides the well-known double click on index.html works too.
The search feature in the sidebar is very limited. You can access to an article by typing in the name of the article. A full-text search is not possible.
[edit] Other language
Every language has an own offline version. You can find the required files in an own subdirectory of our download area.
[edit] Note the license when publishing
The offline version can be published easily via a web server. The demands of our license are met, when the article still contains the footer. If you republish the articles including the images, you have to provide the description page of every single image.
