[edit] Homegrown maps and OpenStreetMap.org
I think we should use two ways of creating maps. Both ways should be accessible to all users, not just experts. One way is creating maps with vectorgraphic software (homegrown maps). DerFussi already did a great job in this area. The other way would use some kind of database-driven system for semiautomatic map production. In this area OpenStreetMap.org could do the job.
[edit] OpenStreetMap.org
"OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. ... Anyone can edit the current map using one of our map editors, or upload and share your GPS tracklogs." Find out more.
The coverage still contains many white areas, but they are constantly growing. I think this can be a win-win relationship. We can add us to the data using partners. They use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license, so there shouldn't be any problems with copyright. One problem is to find an easy way to selected the desired area. The other much harder problem is to ransform the OSM.org data into an eye candy map. This can be done with XSLT and needs to consider the map scale (see below Map Hierarchy).
[edit] Homegrown maps
In addition to the tutorial, we need to define some guides for structural and formatting style for different map scales (see below).
[edit] Comments
Unfortunately, OSM's licence is a problem. CC-by-sa 2.0 works are not allowed to be published under CC-by-sa 1.0. The only thing we could do is to ask each map author for a CC-by-sa 1.0 licensing. Anyway, we could use their map editors for making our own maps. -- Hansm 18:43, 11 December 2006 (CET)
[edit] Map Hierarchy
Some people might think this is overkill (maybe it is), but I think for the structural and formatting style we need to consider the map scale.
