How to re-use Wikivoyage content

Wikivoyage articles and images are available under a Copyleft license. This means you can redistribute and modify them in any medium, as long as you follow a few simple rules.

[edit] About our license

Our license, the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0, requires the following on redistributing an article:

  1. Attribution to the authors of the article.
  2. All derivative works must be available under the same license.
  3. The source work on Wikivoyage must be indicated as sourcework. The same refers to our sources.
  4. Readers and other users must be notified of the license.

The following is our comprehension of the license requirements. It is not legal advice.

[edit] Attribution

You can give attribution to the authors according to their real names or Wikivoyage user names. For users identified with an IP address instead of a user name, you can use "Anonymous" or "Anonymous user of Wikivoyage". You don't have to list any name more than once.

For images, the author history can be found on the corresponding Image: page.

Each Wikivoyage article also has a <link> tag in the HTML meta section, that points to an RDF file with the author names. This may be easier to parse automatically.

[edit] ShareAlike

Any derivative works based on Wikivoyage articles must also be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0.

For article text, a derivative work would be a Web page based solely or primarily on the content of the article. Including a Wikivoyage article into a full Web site doesn't require the whole site to be licensed under the Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0, just the particular page.

For an image, a modified version of the image file is a derivative work. A Web page or other presentation that includes the image doesn't count as a derivative work, and doesn't have to be under the same license.

[edit] Indication of source work

URL to the corresponding article, picture on Wikivoyage.org must be indicated as source reference of each derivative work to. Please note that many works available on Wikivoyage are derivative works themselves. Our sources must be indicated as well. You may find them in the associated RDF file. See How to import contents of other wikis.

[edit] License notice

You must provide a link to the Attribution-ShareAlike license to notify readers and users of their rights to the article text or image. The URL of the license should be sufficient.

[edit] Practice

These are some practical notes for re-using Wikivoyage guides.

  • The printed version of guide is the easiest to obtain and distrubute. However be aware that printout is not completely compatible with the above license. Attribution of authors, source work and license must be added by hand.
  • There are several posiibilities to download a complete Wikivoyage guide. See Offline version and XML dumps.
  • Wikivoyage.org is a service for creating and editing these free guides. We can't support the bandwidth and processing requirements of uses not tuned to this purpose. Therefore we prefer not to serve files or articles if they're framed or embedded into other pages and we wish our pages or images not to be available via proxy-servers.
  • If you create a Web mirror, it can help if you put a link on Mirrors.

[edit] Link back

Wikivoyage articles are written, edited, and illustrated by readers. Our quality improves when readers can fix factual errors, misspellings, or other make other improvements.

For this reason, we ask that you also link back to the original Wikivoyage article, allowing your readers to update it. This is just a request; it's not part of the license requirements. A link back is not a substitute for following the terms of the license.

[edit] Plans for future

We want to organise the Wikivoyage in such a way that it might be simply and practically distrubuted. We believe that redistribution is important, so that travelers could really receive the necessary information.

Some improvements we are working on:

  • Bulk-Download of Wikivoyage articles in XML- and HTML- format sorted by subject or destination.
  • Improvement of Offline-Version (HTML-Bulk).
